Here, you will participate in cutting-edge scientific research, collaborate with world-class research teams, and contribute to the advancement of materials science.
Physicists Wanted: Bring Physics into Materials Synthesis
Growing a material atom by atom is a physics problem: fields, charges, energy landscapes and quantum states decide what forms. We are looking for physicists who want to turn that understanding into control — and to make materials that did not exist before.
Founded by a physicist. Prof. Jiangtao Wang received both his B.Sc. and Ph.D. in Physics from Tsinghua University before moving into materials synthesis at MIT and Peking University. We know the path from physics to materials — and how valuable a physics training is along the way.
Where physics drives our research
Condensed Matter & Quantum Physics
Solid-state physics, quantum mechanics, low-temperature physics
Precise synthesis and characterization of low-dimensional quantum materials, quantum dots and 2D ferroelectrics
Electromagnetism & Surface Physics
Electrodynamics, surface and interface physics, plasma physics
Electric-field-controlled CVD: steering catalysts and nanotube chirality with external fields; charge generation and transfer during growth
Semiconductor & Device Physics
Semiconductor physics, microelectronics, electrical transport
Wafer-scale semiconducting carbon nanotube arrays, van der Waals material transfer and high-performance transistors
Computational Physics, Statistical Physics & AI
Numerical simulation, statistical mechanics, machine learning
Reaction-kinetics modeling of CVD, deep-learning image analysis and closed-loop autonomous synthesis
Experimental Physics & Instrumentation
Optics, measurement and control, electronics, programming
Building in situ monitoring and real-time intervention systems, high-temperature circuits and automated lab control
What you will gain
- Mentoring by a physicist PI who has made the move from physics to materials synthesis
- Hands-on work with home-built electric-field CVD systems and automated laboratory platforms
- Interdisciplinary training across physics, materials science, chemistry and artificial intelligence
- Research aimed at top journals — our work has appeared in Nature, Nature Catalysis and JACS
- No synthesis experience required: physical intuition, quantitative skills and curiosity matter most
Open positions
